Match Reports & Results 2011

Winter Plate – Grafham 13 November

Our last match of the season took place on Nov 13.  Once the fog burned off it was a fine day with a steady south –easterly wind.  The rod average was 4.7 which is incredible for November.  The average fish size was the same as the previous bank match at 2lb 12oz.  Biggest fish of the day was 5lb 9oz  caught by Chris McLeod closely followed by 5lb 1oz from Peter Waterhouse.  Chris had an amazing  13½lb for just 3 fish on shrimp patterns.  Fish are still feeding on shrimp but also seem to be prepared to take bigger lures readily.

Top rod on the day was Chris Bobby who took 8 fish for 23½lb on Cats Whisker from the Stumps on the North shore.  The fish were cruising around 30 yards from the bank and pods of fish swam by every hour or so.  Chris Lane was second with 8 fish for 21½lb from Deep Water point caught on black & green lures.  Nick Preston and Mark Brinkman also managed 8 fish from the Pylon point area but they had smaller fish.

GWFFA Bank Match 22 October

Grafham was on fine form for the final club match of the year despite bright sun and a stiff breeze.  Overall 76 fish were caught all around the east end of the lake with an average weight of 2lb 12 oz.  Best fish of 5lb 10oz were caught by both John Vincent and Alan Briggs.

At the start of the day Andy Linwood predicted that you would need 24lb to win so he went along the dam to look for the shrimp feeders.  Andy’s experience paid as he came in with a bag of 24lb 5 oz, successfully avoiding any small fish, which was enough to win the day and secure the Bank championship following up his 3rd place in both the first 2 matches.  Harley Smith fished similar tactics in a similar place to Andy but his fish were slightly smaller so had to settle for 2nd – mind you Harley showed that he could not count as he claimed 7 fish and was somewhat surprised to find 8 in his bag at the weigh in!!

John Vincent went to the bowl of the dam to target bigger fish - his tactic nearly worked as his bag included one of 5lb 10oz and another over 4lb – the problem was that he could not get enough fish to secure victory.  Remarkably Alan Briggs also had a fish of exactly the same size 5lb 10oz – this one came from the G area.

GWFFA Bank Match Rutland

Fishing from the bank was tough due to large amounts of weed and bright sun.  Nick Preston arrived early in Carrot Creek and caught 2 quality fish early on – 2 more late on from Fantasy were enough to give Nick a win with 4 fish for 9¼lb. It was a difficult day with sunshine pushing the fish away from the bank.  Second place went to Derek Bravington who also caught 4 fish – he caught one  from Normanton in the morning but decided to have a nap in the afternoon.  Waking up with less than an hour to go Derek tried his luck by the lodge and quickly caught 3 more for a total bag of 9lb 1oz.  Andy was again 3rd – he also caught 4 fish but he was clearly targeting juvenile fish as they only went 7lb.

Boat Match 10th July Grafham

A break from tradition and it was not blowing a gale – instead Grafham was flat calm and bright sunshine in the morning then a light shower in the afternoon. Green algae proliferates most of the lake but in the sunshine most of the algae came to the top and the water was clear a couple of feet down. However, the lack of wind meant that fishing was really tough with a rod average of only 1.9.
Despite the different conditions the result of the match was remarkably exactly the same as the previous one in June. Top rod was Chris Bobby with 7 fish followed by Norman Rushton with 5 fish and then Nick Preston who managed 6. Chris Bobby fished a slow glass line with 2 boobies supporting 2 crunchers with fish taking all of the flies. Nick and Norman found that a fast glass was better. A few fish were taken all around the reservoir – Norman Rushton and Nick Preston each had 4 in the morning at G, Chris had 4 in the afternoon near the Lodge, but fish were also taken all along the dam and most places in between.
Best fish were a 3lb 9 oz brown for Norman and a 3lb 9 oz rainbow for Chris

Boat Match 12th June '11 Grafham Water

In traditional form we picked the worst possible weather for the latest club match. 20mph South Easterly winds and steady rain all day meant we all got wet and cold. The fish were also somewhat reluctant with 22 anglers managing a mere 33 fish – at least we did better than mid-Northants whose 26 anglers caught only 20 fish.

Richard Kesek started well with a fish first cast but failed to catch another all day. Chris Lane managed 4 quickly on Orange Blobs in Gaynes although his biggest was 1lb11oz. Nick Preston left it late but also managed 4 drifting off the south shore – although he did waste some time in the morning casting at a large pod of bream. Nick was pipped by Norman Rushton who also had 4 fish but 2oz heavier. The match was won by Chris Bobby with 5 taken from the windy side of the lake between G and Pylon – these were caught on a fast glass line with a cat booby on the point and 3 crunchers up the cast. Chris’ best fish of 3lb 12 oz came from Church Bay on a size 12 Cruncher. Well done to Lianne who accompanied Chris getting cold and wet on the rough side of the lake without complaining too much and managed to catch a couple herself.

Boat Match 1st May '11 Rutland Water

Rutland was not on its best form on Sunday for our first boat match of the season. However, strong winds and bright sun are never a good combination. Overall 15 hardy souls landed only 24 fish although there were only 3 blanks. Apart from the 20mph North Easterly winds, Rutland also remains coloured up most of the arms – this meant most of the action was up towards the dam.
Nick Preston started well catching 2 fish at Sykes in the first hour although this turned out to be the end of his sport for the day. Chris Bobby steadily caught 4 fish in the Sykes – Whitwell area all on Di7 with boobies. Richard Kesek started with nymphs and caught one at Fantasy and another at Sykes before it went quiet and he and boat partner John Tattersfield made a good decision to make the trip up the south arm to Old Hall where Richard found a further 4 fish although he did have to resort to a Di7 as well.

Bank Match 17th April '11 Grafham Water

Bright sun put a few people off the first bank match of the season. Despite the sun and at times flat calm conditions everyone caught fish. Chris Bobby started the day well catching 4 off the lodge bank whilst the others struggled on the North Shore. Eventually the field found their way to the south corner of the dam where Mark Brinkman showed us all how to catch fish. He steadily caught his 8 fish on HiD and a single Coral booby. Is there no one who can stop him as he hs now won 4 of the past 5 bank matches.

Nick Preston and Andy Linwood both managed to find a big over-wintered fish but they could not get enough fish to beat Mark. Kevin had to officiate at the first wedding at Normanton Church which meant he did not start fishing until 3. At 5 o’clock he still had nothing but moved to the lodge bank to catch 4 and lose one in the last hour.
